Marine turtle

The marine turtle are reptile that during their evolution they are suited for to live in sea.

They are 7 the species that populate the seas of the whole world:
Loggerhead turtle - Caretta caretta
Green sea turtle - Chelonia mydas
Leatherback turtle- Dermochelys coriacea
Hawksbill sea turtle - Eretmochelys imbricata
Kemp’s ridley turtle - Lepidochelys kempii
Olive ridley turtle - Lepidochelys olivacea
Flatback turtle - Natator depressus

Loggerhead turtle - Caretta caretta
With a maximum length of around 140 cm of carapace it is one of the three kinds of sea turtle that they live in Mediterranean sea. The carapace introduces a brown coloration twith 5 neural scutes, 5 pairs of costal scutes and 12 pairs of marginal scutes. The plastron has a coloration verged to the yellow. Its feeding is primarily constituted by shellfishes and molluscs but also from plankton organisms as for instance some jellyfishes species. The period of the various deposition from the first ones of May up to the end of August. A nest is composed from a varying number of eggs (thin to a maximum recorded of 190). In Mediterranean the most greater sites of deposition are in Greece, Turkey, Libya, Tunisia and Italy. This species is the only one that regularly it deposes the eggs in some sites along the Italian coasts (es. Islands Pelagie).

Green sea turtle - Chelonia mydas
Systematic characteristic of this species is the presence of 5 neural scutess, 4 pairs of costal scutes and 11 pairs of marginal scutes. The carapace has a green coloration verged to the black and the plastron it is yellowish. It reaches the 125 cm of carapace and the 250 kg of weight.
And' a herbivorous turtle that has a preference for the low waters even if in the juvenile phases it is mainly carnivorous. Detail is the ranfoteca indented that it mainly facilitates its based feeding on Posidonia and Zostera.
The period of deposition is tied up to the latitude in which they lives. In Mediterranean the principal sites are mainly in Turkey, Cyprus and Israel in the summer period. Every nest can be formed from 38-195 eggs.

Leatherback turtle- Dermochelys coriacea

The particularity of this turtle is the absence of a bony carapace that has been replaced by a “leather” skin supported by bony scutes. The coloration is primarily black with pink stains on the neck and in the anterior and back part of the limbs. The anterior fins can reach the 2,5 meters of length. And' the greatest existing turtle: he can reach in fact the 2 ms of length and the 700 Kgs of weight. In the anterior part of the ranfoteca the presence of two cusp they furnish, when the same one is closed, the characteristic form to W.
You mainly nourishes of jellyfishes, squids, shellfishes larvas and fishes. Animals primarily pelagics are known for their behavior during the deposition. It foresees in Mediterranean where however it doesn't nest. The depositions have for instance happened since March in June in Colombia and from October in February in Mexico. The leatherback turtle reproduces him every 2-3 years and he can depose from 4 to 5 nests for reproductive season. A nest can contain a varying number of eggs: from 46 to 160.

Hawksbill sea turtle - Eretmochelys imbricata
Among the sea turtle it is the most colored: the carapace introduces brown and black striations on a fund color amber, the plastron it is yellowish. Introduces 5 neural scutes, 4 pairs of costal and 11 pairs of marginal as the Chelonia. Its name derives from the conformation of the plates that they are the young people partly overlapped. With the growth the structure of the scutes horny curtains to conform herself so perfectly resulting united in the adult individuals. You mainly nourishes of shellfishes, molluscs and algas also reaching the 100 meters deep. You feeds besides of sponges. And' the most tropical of the marine turtle. It has a preference for the tropical, warm and low waters of the indo-pacific area and of the central Atlantic. In the Mediterranean sea an occasional species it is considered. The places of deposition of this species are very isolated. The period of nest-building depends on the latitude. Every nest can contain from 71 to 250 eggs. Even if it precociously enough reaches the sexual maturity (around the 3 years) and the sites of deposition are very isolated the populations of Hawksbill sea turtle they are very rare. In fact this species, in the past times, he has always been subject to a fishing finalized to the production of decorative objects and jewels. Although today of the normative ones are been founded for the guardianship of this species it is not difficult to find small souvenirs in the market of the regions that lean out in the Indian ocean.

Kemp’s ridley turtle - Lepidochelys kempii
Turtle of small dimensions derived considered from an intersection between the loggerhead turtle and the green turtle. You livery of its carapace changes with the age. The small ones are grey dark color to reach a coloration green olive in the adult individuals for then to become again grey dark color in the very old samples. Also the plastron changes coloration from white to yellowish. Its feeding is mainly carnivorous. Her habit reproductive they are a little known but it seems that this species deposes the eggs in an alone beach of Mexico. Characteristic of this species is the phenomenon of the "arribada" a deposition of mass. For instance in a single beach of Racho Nuevo in the Gulf of Mexico they have been recorded 40.000 females in deposition. With to spend some time the number of females that they determine this particular event they are drastically decreased. In 1995 the great arribada has interested only 1429 females. The young people of this species live above all along the European coasts and Africans of the Atlantic ocean.

Olive ridley turtle - Lepidochelys olivacea

The coloration green olive of its carapace confers the name to this turtle, the smallest among the species of sea turtle (in average 68 cm of carapace).
Primarily carnivorous it nourishes him of fishes, molluscs (bivalve and gastropods), shellfishes, etc. As the Kemp’s ridley turtle the females of this kind are given appointment and they go up again together all on the same beach to depose the eggs. In Mexico the period of deposition begins with the summer to continue himself up to the late autumn. Every nest can be formed at the most from around 102 eggs. He lives in the tropical regions of the ocean Pacific, Indian and Atlantic where it has a preference for the waters that cover the continental base.

Flatback turtle - Natator depressus

Characteristic of this turtle is the presence of an only claw in the anterior fins. The carapace of flat and elliptic form has a green coloration - grey while in plastron it is uniformly clear.
Its principal habitat is characterized by low waters and those some coral barriers. Few is known on his alimentary habits. And' an endemic species of Australia where, in the inclusive period between November and December, it deposes the eggs in the north-western zones of the continent. Every nest contains a number meeting place of eggs (from 7 to 73 eggs).
Few or nothing is known around his behaviour and his migrations.
